Magnetotelluric (MT) is a very useful geophysical method for the exploration of geothermal systems.
In addition to being a passive method (with no environmental impact), it allows to image in 3D the electrical resistivity of the subsurface to great depths.
As the resistivity of rocks results from a combination of electron conductors (metals, carbon film) and ions (smectites, salt water, magmas…), MT models allow geologists to characterize potential areas of fluid circulation, hydrothermal alteration, mineralization or magma storage!
In the context of exploration projects, TLS GEOTHERMICS uses high resolution MT models (among others) to help determine targets of interest.
Here, the fault model built independently of the geophysical data is superimposed on the MT model of the studied area and shows a nice correlation.
Enjoy!
